In June, Ascend Dental Academy hosted its first Super GP Conference, bringing together some of the most innovative and forward-thinking dentists in the industry. I had a great time lecturing on Botox and Dermal Filler for the dental practice.
For those who were unable to attend, the event emphasized the importance of expanding your service offerings to meet the growing demands of patients, recession-proofing your business, and bringing more joy and satisfaction to every touchpoint of your practice. It was a fantastic event, featuring many treatment modalities that have made my dental practice grow exponentially. Beyond my lecture on Botox and Dermal Filler, a variety of topics were discussed, including sleep medicine, simple and complex implant therapeutic solutions, full-arch dentistry, orthodontics for the GP and how to use social media to grow your practice. It was a fantastic event.
While the Super GP was a tremendous success, I think there’s one area that should be added for next year: Training for the entire team. I think this is critical to becoming a true Super GP.
This year’s event was packed with dentists, but very few of their team members present. This is true for most every dental conference I’ve attended. I think this is a missed opportunity.
It’s challenging enough to absorb all of the information we’re given at a CE meeting. On top of that, we’re tasked with relaying all of the learnings to our team and then working with them to execute on all of the new ideas. It’s even harder if your team is not fully on board.
Granted, budget and schedule constraints are real barriers to taking your team to every dental event. I strongly recommend booking time on the Monday following any CE event to review what you learned with the entire team. It’s important to do it while the information is still fresh.
In my practice, we always block off lunch the following Monday and bring in food for the team. My associate and I discuss what we learned and how we see it benefitting our team and patients. We include the entire staff and together we put together a plan for implementation. This approach creates team buy-in and helps to ensure the time, energy and new knowledge gained from the conference doesn’t go to waste.
Another area that’s critical to becoming a Super GP: Team diagnosis — a partner approach to diagnosing patients.
Few dentists have a system in place that allows their teams to “set the table” for a co-diagnosis. Creating an environment where your team participates in the diagnosis leads to greater case acceptance of long-term, comprehensive dental care. Believe it or not, this has nothing to do with whether you are an insurance heavy practice, a fee-for-service practice, or whether you practice in Manhattan, New York or Manhattan, Kansas.
As a dentist, your ability to provide great dental care, or even just seeing the possibility of that care in your patients’ mouths, is a gift and can be very satisfying. It only gets better when your team is truly aligned and working in complete symmetry to diagnose, communicate with the patient and deliver fantastic treatment.
That combination will leave everyone smiling!

Dr. Nemec was born and raised in Corpus Christi, Texas and attended the University of Texas at Austin for his undergraduate studies. He received his Doctorate of Dental Surgery degree from The University of Texas Health Science Center - San Antonio in 1998 and promptly moved back to Austin to begin his private practice career.
